Homeless Students

The Durand-Arkansaw School District is committed to assisting students experiencing homelessness. We closely follow the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to ensure that homeless children and unaccompanied minors have equal access to a free and appropriate public education so that they can continue to meet the same challenging academic standards to which all students are held.

McKinney-Vento defines homeless students as those who:

  • Are temporarily sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason

  • Are living in hotels or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations

  • Are living in emergency shelters

  • Have a nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings

  • Are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings

  • Are runaway children or children who are abandoned

Parents, school district staff, or community members who have questions regarding homelessness should contact the school district’s homeless liaison:
