Homeless Students
The Durand-Arkansaw School District is committed to assisting students experiencing homelessness. We closely follow the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to ensure that homeless children and unaccompanied minors have equal access to a free and appropriate public education so that they can continue to meet the same challenging academic standards to which all students are held.
McKinney-Vento defines homeless students as those who:
Are temporarily sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
Are living in hotels or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations
Are living in emergency shelters
Have a nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings
Are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings
Are runaway children or children who are abandoned
